Weak vehicle exports in September

Only 28.5 vehicles were shipped, the year's second-worst monthly result

Brazilian vehicle exports fell significantly in September. About 28.5 automobiles, light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses went through the Brazilian ports heading abroad. It was the year’s second-worst monthly result, slightly better than the 28 thousand shipments registered in January.

The performance was much lower than in August when 47 thousand units were exported – the larger year’s volume, equal to June’s. The 39% plunge happened due to a combination of three main reasons, according to Márcio de Lima Leite, Anfavea’s president.

Two weren’t unexpected: more restrictions for import licenses by the government in Argentina, the main Brazilian automotive industry’s market abroad, and the end of the quota of 50 thousand vehicles free of import taxes previewed in a commercial agreement with Colombia.

“We also had some punctual logistic problems. Due to the world chain’s disarrange, two or three ships did not depart, and the shipments were postponed for this month”, adds the executive. Nonetheless, he still believes that exportation will have one of the best results of the last years.

In a certain way, this is already a granted scenario. From January through September, the manufacturers exported 364 thousand vehicles, 31.2% more than in the same period last year. In 2022, the 343 thousand units shipped in the first nine months of 2019, before the pandemic, were also overcome and, especially the 207 thousand from 2020, the year when the sector had its worst result in two decades, with only 324 thousand vehicles in 12 months.

The severe shipment fall reflected almost at the same level in the sector’s income with the activity. In September, it was limited to US$ 767 million, a 26.5% fall compared to August. Nonetheless, year-to-date, business with other countries has already reached US$ 7.6 billion, 37.3% more than the US$ 5.5 billion registered in the first nine months of 2021.
