Pickup sales have been decisive for the Brazilian market growth this year. While automobile sales increased by 9.2% until August, reaching 1.06 million units, pickup deliveries jumped by 22.6%, from 204.4 thousand to 250.6 thousand units.

The light commercial vehicle segment, which also includes vans, grew 17.7% from 240.8 thousand to 283.4 thousand. Light vehicles – automobiles, pickups and vans – totaled 1.35 million units, growing 10.9% over the 1.21 million units sold in the same period in 2022.

Models like Fiat Strada and Chevrolet Montana contributed to the segment’s positive performance. The Italian brand’s pickup took back the ranking lead in August and the first place in the year so far. Two hatches fight for the second place, General Motors’s Onix and Volkswagen’s Polo.

New pickups are arriving or close to arriving in the market, such as Ram’s Rampage and Fiat Titano, both from the Stellantis group.

At the month’s balance release last Tuesday, 9/5, Anfavea’s president, Márcio de Lima Leite, talked about the change in the market’s profile during the affordable car incentive plan promoted by the government, which favored mostly the more affordable models.

“Hatches share reached 28.6%, to fall to 22.7% last month as the government incentives ended. On the other hand, SUVs’ share went from 38% to 42%.

Internal sales reached 207.7 thousand units in August, a 7.9% fall from July. Year-to-date, there were 1.433 million registers, versus 1.3 million in the same period last year. The performance is still 9.4% positive.
