A natural gas-driven Scania bus GNV) began this Friday, 3/3, a period of evaluation in the public transportation system in Curitiba’s metropolitan region. During 30 days, the model will be operated by Viação São José to check efficiency indicators, especially the reduction of pollutant emissions.

The project is part of a sustainable mobility initiative and includes the Companhia Paranaense de Gás (Compagás), Paraná’s Metropolitan Matters Agency and the state’s government.

According to Scania, using natural gas can reduce by up to 20% CO2 emissions compared to diesel. The reduction of NOx (nitrogen oxide) reaches up to 90%, and it also emits 85% less particulate matter.

“Many cities worldwide already have 80% of their fleets driven by natural gas. This is the first bus we will have inParaná to compare the efficiency and operation cost to a diesel bus, as well as the environmental aspects that worry us every day”, said Paraná’s governor Ratinho Jr. at the project presentation last Tuesday, 2/28, at the government palace in Curitiba.

The model to be tested is a K280 4×2 chassis with eight gas cylinders, which grants it a 300 km range. The 280 cv engine can use GNV, biomethane, or a mix of both gases. The vehicle has a Padron body for up to 86 passengers and will operate in the São José/Guadalupe route 280 km a day.

“We have a full alternate package to diesel with an excellent product, services, energy efficiency, advanced and viable technology and efficient systems for modern and profitable operation management. All uniting perfectly sustainable mobility to operational economy”, said Celso Mendonça, Scania Operações Comerciais Brasil’s Mobility Solutions Sales manager.

After the tests end in Curitiba’s metropolitan region, the bus should stay in Paraná for more tests on a municipal route in partnership with the city’s administration.
