General Motors decided to extend by two days the halt of its plant in Gravataí, RS, where it produces the Onix. The collective vacation return scheduled for Thursday, 6/22, was postponed to next Monday, 6/26. The initial ten collective vacation days and the two additional will be paid as normal working days.

The company and the Gravataí Metalworkers Union confirmed the information but did not give details about the halt extension. Valcir Ascari, the union president, said a new negotiation was unnecessary, as the extension is for just two days.

In São José dos Campos, SP, where production also was suspended this month, the return is scheduled for 6;26. At this plant, instead of collective vacations, the days stopped will be compensated by the employees. The situation of the plant in São Paulo where the S-10 pickup is made is more serious.

In a meeting with the São José dos Campos and Region Metalworkers Union last Friday, 6/16, General Motors’ management maintained its proposal of a temporary lay-off for up to 1,200 workers. The labor association said GM strengthened the need to suspend the contracts alleging a sales fall:

“The union keeps negotiating with the company demanding job stability for all plant workers. There will be a new meeting on Thursday, 6/22”.

GM was the only of the major manufacturers not to release any note about the price reduction due to the government measure establishing discounts from R$ 2 thousand to R$ 8 thousand for cars up to R$ 120 thousand.

The company promoted a sales festival last weekend at its plant in São Caetano do Sul, SP, announcing a R$ 10 thousand discount for the Onix. The Chevrolet product facing more difficulty in the market is the S-10 pickup, which is still not finding buyers even with a R$ 30 thousand bonus offered by the brand even before the discounts program.
