For the first time in the year, the total volume was higher than in 2021

For the first time in the last 18 months, in August, no manufacturer had to halt a plant in Brazil due to the lack of semiconductors. The result was a production record last month, with 238 thousand vehicles, an 8.7% increase over July and 43.9% regarding August 2021.
It was also the first time the sector registered a year-to-date growth in 2022 compared to last year. About 1.55 million vehicles left the assembly lines from January through August, a 4.7% increase compared to almost 1.48 million in the same period in 2021.
“This August, for the first time in a year and a half, we succeeded in operating without no plant completely halted. The semiconductors flow is finally beginning to improve, although we are still going through a period of offer restrictions”, told Anfavea’s president, Márcio de Lima Leite, at the announcement of August and year-to-date data.
The executive celebrated other figures of the month, which he called “encouraging”. Vehicle sales, including lights and heavy, reached 209 thousand units, the best result in 19 months.
The average 9.1 thousand vehicles licensed in the internal market was also the best in the year. Exports surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with 335 thousand vehicles shipped in the last eight months.
Despite the August improvements, Anfavea’s president chose to talk of a “moderate optimism” for the last four months of the year. He recalled the upcoming World Cup and the presidential elections, which can affect the average daily sales in the second semester.
Nonetheless, he considered positive the workforce growth from 103.9 thousand to 104.2 thousand compared to July and the sanctioning of the law creating the Renovar, a program to renew the national fleet of heavy vehicles.
“The law still depends on its regulation, but it is important to finally have a program to follow to renew the fleet and, therefore, contribute to the needed and so spoken decarbonization.”
In the end, he informed that the project Anfavea and other organizations are discussing with the government for Brazil to have local production of semiconductors is advancing this semester.
“We are going to Japan to look for possible interested parties for this kind of projects and scheduling online meetings with manufacturers from Asian countries to talk about this theme.”
