Stellantis presented this week the STLA Medium, its new global platform for the C and D segments that will become the basis for vehicles in Europe this year yet. According to the manufacturer, one of its major attributes is the potential 700 km range for battery electric models.

Flexible, the STLA Medium will be used in a great variety of models and different drive configurations that would fit the universe of about 35 million vehicles sold this year, almost half of the 78.5 million vehicles of all segments negotiated on the planet.

Stellantis’s brands currently offer 26 models for this market segment, but assembled on diverse platforms. The STLA Medium alone could be used by up to two million yearly vehicles made in the group’s plants.

On the new platform will be developed conventional passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs to be sold worldwide with front or four-wheel drive (with the addition of a second electric drive module at the rear) and from 160 to 285 kW.

The wheelbase could be from 2.7 m to 2.9 m, the total length from 4.3 m to 4.9 m, ground clearance over 220 mm and 750 mm-diameter wheels.

“What we see now is a product to provide clean, safe and affordable mobility, supported by € 30 billion investments in electrification and software up to 2025”, said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis’ CEO, at the new platform’s presentation.

The investment package will originate three other battery electric platforms that will help the company to achieve, up to 2030, a full portfolio of battery models in Europe and 50% of electric passenger cars and light trucks in the United States.

STLA Medium’s 700 km range will be achieved by the configuration that will use a superior battery package, while in the standard configuration, it will be possible to ride 500 km, according to WLTP. “With a performance up to 98 kWh, the STLA Medium is stored energy best in the category “, assures the manufacturer.

With a 400 V electric architecture, the STLA Medium should provide the best energy efficiency, charging time and connectivity, according to the manufacturer.

Depending on the application, the consumption could be under 14 kWh per 100 km, the best in the category, says Stellantis. Battery charging from 20% through 80% will take 27 minutes, 2.4 kWh per minute.
