The workers of Mercedes-Benz’s plant in São Bernardo do Campo, SP, approved on Thursday, 4/13, a layoff proposal valid from two through three months. The temporary contract suspension, previewed in a collective deal, will apply to 1.2 thousand employees beginning in May.

The measure was negotiated by the manufacturer and the ABC Metalworkers Union. During the layoff period, the workers will receive their liquid salaries and go through professional training.

“The workers are granted return to the plant. In case of a new layoff is needed, depending on the truck and bus market behavior, those who included now will not be included”, asserted Sandro Vitoriano, coordinator of the union at Mercedes-Benz.

The manufacturer, which has about eight thousand employees in Brazil, including those from Juiz de Fora, MG, had already announced one-month collective vacations for 300 workers beginning in April, shorter working weeks and the suspension of the second shift in São Paulo’s unit for three months beginning in May.
