At the press conference when the automotive sector’s data were released this Friday, 9/9, the president of Anfavea, Márcio de Lima Leite, was optimistic about the possibility of Brazil becoming a semiconductors producer in a not-so-distant future.
Among other information, he said he is traveling to Japan this weekend with Brazilian government representatives and members of other industrial segments to look for chip manufacturers in the Asian country interested in investing in Brazil.
“We have meetings scheduled in Japan and will also promote meetings, even virtual ones, with investors from other Asian countries to discuss this theme”, said the executive. He also did mention the existence of an inoperative plant in Ribeirão da Almas, MG – the Unitec -, which could be bought to accelerate the local production process.
According to Leite, the BNDES and BDMG participate in the Unitec, and it can favor possible negotiations with foreign investors. “This trip to Japan will be our first concrete action looking to have local semiconductors production, but we have other opportunities under the radar”, assured Leite.
He said there are other facilities in Brazil built to manufacture semiconductors that never operated, like this one in Ribeirão das Almas, close to the Confins airport. According to Anfavea’s president, the building has all the technical conditions needed to produce chips, as an adequate ground, without risk of vibrations.
The company is under judicial recovery. “Some machines were sold, but others are ready to be used. We have the Brazilian government’s commitment to issue a regulation in the next weeks to make the local production of semiconductors viable. We are also committed to verifying other countries’ incentives to contribute to the definition of a Brazilian project”.
